4 Signs Your AC Has Suffered Storm Damage

AC Storm Damage in Philadelphia, PA

Just as severe storms can bring about damage to anything from electrical wires to cars, they can just as easily cause harm to your AC unit. After a major storm, it never hurts to check on your unit for signs of impairment. Here are four signs your AC has been damaged to keep an eye out for.

1. It Won’t Power Back On

If there was a blackout in your area during the storm and your AC unit still hasn’t come back on, it may be the result of a power surge. Usually, resetting your circuit breaker will be all you need to power it back on. If it still isn’t working, however, you’ll need to call and get it repaired by a professional.

2. Strange Noises

If you hear any unusual noises coming from your AC, it could mean that debris was blown into your unit. If your unit is designed for user maintenance, it’s worth trying to get inside and clean it out. Otherwise, the assistance of a technician is probably necessary.

3. Water is Pooling Around Your Unit

Although your AC unit is designed to be water-resistant, it can become damaged if a storm hits it with a lot of water for a prolonged period of time. Water that pools around the unit could be an indicator of a drainage problem that should be addressed as soon as possible. If you feel comfortable examining the problem yourself, you should be sure to turn off the circuit breaker first to prevent electrical shock.

4. Insufficient Output

If your AC isn’t working as well as it usually does, it might be a sign that the unit’s refrigerant lines were damaged by high winds and are leaking. Instead of attempting to repair the refrigerant lines yourself, you should seek help from a technician as soon as you can to save yourself as much money as possible. The more refrigerant your AC loses, the harder it will be for it to keep functioning sufficiently.
