HVAC Systems: How Long Do They Last?
Chances are you own some form of central heating and cooling system, or you own a system of ductless mini-splits to heat and cool the most frequently occupied important rooms. HVAC systems, whether ducted or ductless or powered by gas or by electricity, all come with an estimated life span. This can range from 10 to 30 or even 35 years, depending on the system and, as you’ll see below, certain other factors.
Type of HVAC System
As we said, HVAC systems vary in their life expectancy based on what they are. Heat pumps can live for up to 20 years whereas oil furnaces, to take one example, may only go for 12 years. Between them would be electric and gas furnaces with an average life span of 15 years. Mini-splits, on account of their energy efficiency and their compact nature, can last three decades.
Frequency of Maintenance
Tune-ups are a must for any HVAC system; in fact, most manufacturers make it a requirement for their warranties that the owners get professional maintenance every year. We recommend biannual maintenance to keep both the heating and cooling system in good shape.
The purpose of maintenance is to eliminate those issues that, while starting off small, will cause major issues down the line. These issues, such as clogged filters and dirt build-up on the evaporator coil, wear down the system and otherwise shorten its life.
Frequency of Use
Even when well-maintained, a system will wear out quicker if it’s continually in operation. In extreme climates, HVAC systems do have to run constantly out of necessity, but still, homeowners can do much to counteract this: programming the thermostat, for example.
