Steps to Take When You Smell Gas Near Your Furnace

Furnace Repair in Philadelphia, PA

If your furnace is leaking natural gas, you’ll notice an odor similar to rotten eggs or sulfur around the system. Your downstairs carbon monoxide detector may also go off, indicating you and your family may be in danger. A natural gas leak puts you in danger of carbon monoxide poisoning, which can cause headaches, confusion, drowsiness, and heart palpitations. Implement the following safety tips immediately when you smell gas around your furnace.

Turn Off Appliances

The natural gas leak is likely coming from your system’s compromised heat exchanger or the internal supply valve. You should first turn off your furnace and any other nearby appliances that may create a spark. With enough gas in the air, any flame poses a risk of starting a fire.

Turn Off Main Gas Valve

If you have the time, you should also turn off your main gas shutoff valve. This will be located where your gas line enters your house from the street. Gas pipes made from iron are often black and have a yellow, 90-degree handle. Turning this off immediately after noticing the smell of rotten eggs will stop more gas from leaking inside the home.

Evacuate Home

After everything is turned off, evacuate everyone outside a safe distance away and contact your local emergency services. They’ll find the source of the leak and let you know when it’s safe to go back in. You should also call for expert HVAC maintenance to prevent future gas leaks and keep your furnace in top shape.
